So yeah I'm a filthy horse archer and I'll reluctantly use a lance (swingy or stabby) or sword and board (literally a board because it's the best shield in the game) if I want to sacrifice a quiver. A polearm, a 2H axe, a long sword and a shield. Medium heavy armour. 2 handed axe. Couch Lance and a 2 handed sword. As for break points, focus points are much more common than attribute points. You can get decent at most skills with just focus points. If I recall correctly, 7 in an attribute with 5 focus points can take you over 275. 8 takes you close to 300 (or perhaps just over). 9 takes you over 300. And 10 takes you to 330.

Allocating companions' skill points. I'm 100% sure I left the "auto allocate companions skills" box unchecked after character creation, and it is still unchecked when I go to campaign settings. However I have never been asked to allocate my companion's skill points. And when I go to their character screen, they never have a point to spend.
