If it's a wonky/broken USB connection you will hear the USB plugin/plug-out sound from windows. If the wireless connection to the receiver is lost you will see the controller connection light flashing. Could also be a USB contention issue where the bus sharing with another device is causing issues. So try a different usb port on a different hub.

My issue is with the wired Xbox 360 controller on Windows 10 version 21h1. The device manager says "Unknown USB Device (Device descriptor request failed)". Thanks for the reply. However, the driver is installed properly and the driver recognizes the xbox controller when it's plugged in. However, the instructions in your second link, say to open the game controllers screen in windows xp, the screen you can get to from the control panel, or by typing in the right stuff in the run option of the start menu like the website's instructions say.
